March 27, 2014 - Visualizing Our Typewriter Inventory

I work with data for a living, and I have been struggling with tools that can help with the presentation of heavy amounts of information,  in visual ways.

Today I stumbled across Tableau Pubic, and decided to pump my (out of date) typewriter collection data into Tableau to see what it could show me about things like the distribution of our collection by manufacturer, year made, owner.

This was about 20 minutes of effort, so don't be too harsh on me. :)

I need to update the data, because it is about 3 months (and 25 machines) behind. More to come.

To play with Tableau yourself, you can find it here: http://www.tableausoftware.com/products/public

  1. I'd been fiddling with the idea of making a bar chart of my collection by manufacturer, but this is much more compelling! I have a Mac so I can't download Tableau Public, but I've found some online tools that give the same result. You can expect to see a similar thing by me soon. :)

(Also, I don't know how I missed your blog, I haven't been following you until now.)

    1. Nick - I am a Mac guy too - but I'm running it in a virtual machine. :-) supposedly they are releasing a Mac version very soon.
Good times - thanks for stopping in.

  2. My biggest bubble at present would be "Olivetti" - not by design, just what became available locally. :)

    1. Yeah, our Smith-Corona bubble is not planned. I've shifted from Selectrics, to manuals, and now am totally head over heels with the Olympia SM series. Just got our first Lettera 22. Funny how the winds of opportunity blow. Eh? :-)
